Priorities

Everyone has an idea of what is a priority to them, and those priorities are distinguish depending on what it is we are doing. Since at work my job is determined by dates and timeframes those applications that have the oldest dates have to be processed first. Our schedules at home are first determined by what our kids have going on and where or not more than one thing can be done at once.

Yesterday, I reevaluated my priorities just a little bit. Usually I do what I can to make it to work and fit in appointments or functions in as needed without disrupting my work day too much. Yesterday, I had the funeral for a fellow legion member and things did not go as planned. Not for the family, for the congregation, or my plans to go into work afterword. The company that comes to install the vault at the cemetery was delayed for some reason so they would not be available for at least two hours after the service. My priorities switched. Getting into work for half a day was no longer at the top, using a day of leave to honor a fellow veteran took priority.

Afterward, I could have gone in for an hour and a half in the morning and gone back for three hours in the afternoon, but to drive back and forth twice (a total of forty miles with two trips) when the service was held across the street seemed like a waste of time and gas.

Besides the funeral, my kids were out of school for the day. So my priority in the afternoon switched again to spend time with my boys and, as is ended up, with my parents, niece and nephew. Coffee, two different kinds of brownies, laughter, and good conversation.

My priorities may have changed for the day yesterday, but they will return to what they were Monday morning. Every once in a while, though, it's good to look at our priorities and realign them to match what is important to us. I won't miss the day of leave I took, I will have extra work Monday, but at the end of the day I know, that for me, I had my priorities in the right place on Friday.
